Stage 04 · Stock Rotation & Batch Control

CHOOSE THE NEXT UNIT

Asking staff to lift heavy existing cartons out of a deep shelf just to tuck a new delivery behind them rarely survives a busy Friday afternoon. Reliable stock rotation works when physical shelving mechanics and high-visibility date coding make the oldest or earliest-expiring unit the easiest one to reach.

MATCHING FIFO, FEFO, AND LIFO TO YOUR INVENTORY

Not every item in a warehouse requires the same rotation discipline. Applying strict batch tracking to galvanised steel brackets wastes administrative hours, whereas ignoring shelf life on sealants, batteries, elastomeric O-rings, or food-grade supplies creates expensive write-offs and customer complaints.

Method Operational Rule Ideal Inventory Types Physical Shelf Setup
FIFO (First-In, First-Out) Oldest delivery receipt leaves the bay first Boxed components, printed packaging, electronics, apparel Two-bin swap system or rear-loaded gravity roller tracks
FEFO (First-Expired, First-Out) Shortest remaining manufacturer shelf-life leaves first, regardless of delivery date Adhesives, resins, medical consumables, batteries, food/beverage Single-lot bins or quarter-coded expiry stickers facing the pick aisle
LIFO (Last-In, First-Out) Most recently placed unit is taken first (use only where degradation is zero) Aggregate building materials, raw bar stock, unprinted pallet dunnage Single-side drive-in bays or floor-stacked bulk blocks

TWO-BIN SWAP AND REAR-LOAD MECHANICS FOR STATIC SHELVING

You do not need expensive motorised carousels to stop stock stagnating at the back of static steel shelving. If your bays are accessible only from the front aisle, place two narrower plastic totes side by side (`Left Bin` and `Right Bin`) for the same SKU, along with a clip-on `"PICK FROM THIS BIN"` token.

When a delivery arrives, the putaway operator places the new batch into the reserve bin without disturbing the active pick bin. Once the active bin empties completely, the picker simply moves the clip token across to the full bin. Zero double-handling, zero buried stock.

Quarter-Colour Arrival Dots

Apply a 25 mm coloured dot sticker to every outer carton at the receiving bench (e.g., Terracotta for Q1, Olive for Q2, Ochre for Q3, Charcoal for Q4). Walking down an aisle immediately reveals any out-of-sequence carton still sitting on a shelf two quarters later.
