Stage 05 · Barcodes & Picking Methods

REMOVE THE GUESSWORK

Walking constitute up to 60% of a picker's day, while reading long part strings off crumpled paper accounts for most wrong-item shipments. Sequencing pick tickets by shelf coordinate and verifying movements with a rapid barcode scan cuts unnecessary travel and stops mis-picks at the bin face.

SELECTING THE RIGHT PICKING WORKFLOW

Matching your picking style to your order profile prevents trolley congestion in narrow aisles and removes double sorting at the packing bench.

Picking Method How It Works Best Order Profile Key Safeguard
Discrete Single-Order One operator completes one order from start to finish in a single container Multi-line trade orders with bulky or heavy items Simple accountability; zero secondary sorting required at packing
Multi-Tote Batch Picking (Pick-to-Cart) Operator pushes a trolley holding 6 to 12 numbered totes, picking multiple small orders in one serpentine pass High volume of 1-to-3 item e-commerce or spare-part orders Scan the tote barcode (`TOTE-04`) immediately after scanning the item to prevent dropping stock into the wrong customer box
Zone Picking Each operator stays inside an assigned zone (e.g., Small Parts vs Pallet Racking) and passes completed totes to a consolidation bench Stockrooms mixing fragile small components with heavy forklift goods Eliminates foot-traffic conflicts around counterbalance or reach trucks

PRACTICAL BARCODE STANDARDS FOR SMALL TEAMS

You do not need proprietary encoding to run barcode checks. Use Code 128 or DataMatrix (2D) for internal shelf location labels (`S-02-04-B-01`) and internal component bags, alongside manufacturer EAN-13 / UPC-A or GS1-128 barcodes on incoming trade cartons.

Thermal Transfer vs Direct Thermal

Use direct thermal paper labels only for outbound courier shipping labels that need to last a single week. For shelf locations and long-term stock bins, always print with a thermal transfer ribbon on synthetic matte stock so sunlight and abrasion never fade the bars.
